habsburg schloss castle radbot switzerland swiss brugg ruin

Habsburg Castle       Built: 1020 AD

Perched on a hill in the town of Habsburg, just outside of Brugg AG, stands the remains of a fortification like no other, for it is the namesake of Holy Roman Emperors. Without much effort, one can enjoy views that stretch from the Alps in the south to former Swabia in the North. The original kingdom of the Early Habsburgs lies before you.

When Count Radbot von Altenburg’s trained hawk didn’t return during a hunt, he went searching for it. He found the hawk perched high upon a wooded hill with excellent views of the surrounding lands. His brother-in-law, Werner, the Bishop of Strasbourg subsequently provided funds to build a castle on that spot which they named Habichtsburg. The name was eventually shortened to Habsburg and soon gave the family a new name as well. Many additions and subsequent demolitions have occurred on this site over the past 1000 years. An informative booklet written by Peter Frey and Martin Hartmann (German, French, English) is available at the castle for 9CHF. It contains several diagrams that help explain the preserved ruins of the front castle and what remains of the rear castle. The rear castle ruin now houses a museum, restaurant, and banquet facilities and the large tower is open to the public.

Opening hours: October-April     Wednesday-Sunday  9am-12midnight

                                May-September  Tuesday-Sunday       9am-12midnight

Fees: Admission to the tower and museum is free. Show your support by having a coffee or something to eat in the restaurant on the ground floor of the rear castle. Postcards and books are for sale here also.
