Klosterkirche Muri 1027
The monastery of Muri is an important cultural monument in the canton of Aargau. In the centuries following it's foundation in 1027, the Benedictine monastery has developed into the structure we see today.
The monastery is a spectacular landmark in the hills of Freiamt, visible far and wide. The foundation dates back to 1027 when Ital, Countess of Lorraine, together with her husband Count Radebot von Habsburg, donated thier lands to the monastery. Benedictine monks from Einsiedeln colonized the monestary in 1032. On October 11, 1064 Bishop Rumold consectrated the Church of Saint Martin of Tours. A women's convent was founded circa 1080, which was moved around 1140 to Hermetschwil.
The Benedictine Abbey developed into it's the present shape and size over the course of eight centuries. In the Church one can see the Romanesque crypt, the Gothic choir and Baroque Interior which the monasteries constructed over centuries.
In 1842 the Great Council of the Kanton of Aargau ordered the repeal of the then existing eight monasteries of the canton, including those of Muri. Abbot and convent moved in 1845 to the former Augustinian monastery in Gries near Bolzano. The Benedictine Muri also assumed the leadership of the College Sarnen (today Kantonsschule Obwalden).
The convent of Muri still lives on in Semolina and in Sarnen. Since 1960 a small group is again located in the hospice in Muri.
