Schloss Lenzburg 11th Century
The Counts of Lenzburg constructed a palace and residential tower in the early 11th Century. After the extinction of the Counts of Lenzburg 1173 Lenzburg, the property was a possession of the German Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa.
Count Rudolf von Habsburg IV became German King Rudolf I in 1276. As an imperial fief, the castle came into possession of the Habsburgs, whose ancestral castle is located a few miles away. They enlarged the facility by a gatehouse and the Knight's house and completed the fortifications around the hilltop.
Following the conquest of Aargau 1415, a Federal Bailiff from Bern took residence in the castle in 1442. He created the bailiwick and present day Stapferhaus in the Bernese style. Other buildings such as Pfisterei (bakery), laundry, stoneware and guard house were constructed but no longer survive. The 17th Century saw various fortifications, such as the Eastern and Southern bastions and the kennel at the entrances. In the 18th Century improvements and renovations were made to the northern parts of the building.
After the founding of Canton Aargau In 1803 the castle became property of the state. It was rented in 1823, to the Christian Educators Group, which opened it as a boys' institution. After the boy's school closed, the castle changed hands several times. No large structural changes took place. The castle was purchased in 1893 by the American Augustus E. Jessup, and restored to the state of the 17th Century. Newer structures were removed and older structures rebuilt or restored. Increased comfort due to technical installations and the transformation of the outdoor spaces into gardens were his goal.
In 1911 the castle as acquired by the family of explorer Lincoln Ellsworth.
Canton Aargau received Lenzburg castle as an endowment from the widow of Lincoln Ellsworth in 1956 and formed a foundation for its maintenance and preservation. From 1978 to 1986 Lenzburg Castle was extensively restored and furnished for use by the general public.
